Red Oak

Red Oaks (Quercus rubra) are valued for their strength, longevity, and ability to provide significant shade. Red Oak trees generally grow 1 to 3 feet per year, with fast growth often cited as 2 feet or more annually, especially when young (ages 5-15) and in ideal conditions (full sun, moist, well-drained soil). Growth slows as they mature, but they remain significant trees, reaching 60-75 feet.

Red Maple

Red Maples (Acer rubrum) are popular choices for their vibrant fall colors and shade. Red Maples grow about 1 to 1.5 feet per year, but can grow faster, with some reaching up to 2 feet or more annually, especially in ideal conditions like full sun and moist, well-drained soil. The growth rate is considered medium to fast, with many trees reaching their full height of 40 to 70 feet.

Sugar Maple

Sugar Maples (Acer saccharum) are popular choices for their vibrant fall colors and shade. Sugar Maples grow about 1 to 2 feet per year, especially when young and under ideal conditions like well-drained soil and full sun. The growth rate is considered medium to fast, with many trees reaching their full height of 50 to 80 feet.

Tulip

Tulips (Liriodendron tulipifera) are appreciated for their rapid growth, providing quick shade, and tulip-shaped flowers. Tulip trees are fast-growing, adding 1 to 3 feet in height per year, especially when young and under ideal conditions like full sun and moist, well-drained soil. They are known for rapid establishment, making them great for shade and reforestation. Tulip trees grow very large over their long lifespan, typically reaching 80-120 feet, but can exceed 150 feet in ideal forest conditions.

Black Walnut

Black Walnuts (Juglans nigra) are large, valuable hardwoods known for their rich, dark wood, distinctive diamond-patterned bark, feathery compounfd leaves and edible, aromatic nuts. Black Walnuts are excellent shade trees, providing dense, leafy cover and growing very large. Black Walnuts grow fast when young and under ideal conditions (well-drained soil, full sun) averaging 1 to 3 feet per year. Growth slows as they mature, with many trees reaching their full height of 50 to 75 feet.

Sycamore

Sycamore trees (Platanus occidentalis) are large, fast-growing trees known for their distinctive peeling, camouflage-like bark and large, lobed leaves that are often as wide as they are long. Sycamore trees are fast growers, typically adding 2 to 6 feet in height per year, especially when young trees and in moist, rich soil. Their rapid growth makes them excellent shade trees, quickly filling out a landscape. Sycamore trees grow very large over their long lifespan, typically reaching 100 feet.

Redbud

Redbuds (cercis canadensis) are known for their unique crooked shapes and stunning pink/lavender spring flowers that bloom on bare branches before heart-shaped leaves emerge. Redbud trees typically grow at a moderate pace, adding 1 to 2 feet in height per year, though young trees in ideal conditions (full sun, well-drained soil) can grow faster.  Redbud trees typically grow 20-30 feet in their lifetime.

Norway Spruce

Norway Spruce (picea abies) are fast-growing, large evergreens known for their graceful, drooping branches (especially as it matures) and dark green, sharp, four-sided needles, making it a popular Christmas tree. Norway spruce trees are fast growers, typically adding 2 to 3 feet in height per year, especially when young and well-established in ideal moist, cool conditions, making them great for quick privacy screens and windbreaks. Growth slows as they mature, with many trees reaching their full height of 60 to 80 feet.
